It is also a moment to reflect on what still needs to change. \nMillions of children and young people around the world continue to face barriers to quality education because of poverty\, inequality\, conflict\, displacement\, discrimination and limited access to resources. The challenge is therefore not simply to get more people into classrooms\, but to ensure that the education they receive is inclusive\, equitable\, relevant and capable of preparing them for the future. \nWHY DO WE COMMEMORATE THIS DAY?\n\nTo reaffirm education as a human right.\nEvery person deserves access to quality education and lifelong learning opportunities.\nTo promote inclusive and equitable education.\nNo learner should be left behind because of poverty\, gender\, disability\, location or social circumstances.\nTo recognize education as a driver of innovation and development.\nEducation equips people with the knowledge and skills to solve problems\, create opportunities and contribute to their communities.\nTo recognize the role of education in building peace.\nEducation can promote understanding\, dialogue\, tolerance and respect for human rights.\nTo encourage collective responsibility.\nGovernments\, educators\, parents\, communities\, young people\, civil society and the private sector all have a role to play in transforming education.\nTo look ahead.\nThe world is changing rapidly. Technology\, artificial intelligence\, new industries and evolving social realities are changing what learners need to know and how they learn. It has no health benefits and can result in immediate and long-term physical\, psychological\, and social consequences. \nThis day provides an opportunity to renew our commitment to protecting girls and women\, challenging harmful social norms\, supporting survivors\, and working with communities to end FGM permanently. \nUnderstanding Female Genital Mutilation\nFemale genital mutilation refers to procedures that intentionally alter or injure the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. It is most often carried out on girls during childhood or adolescence. \nFGM can cause severe pain\, bleeding\, infections\, complications during childbirth\, long-term health problems\, psychological distress\, and other serious consequences. The practice can also reinforce inequality and limit the rights and opportunities of girls and women. \nDespite decades of efforts to end the practice\, millions of girls remain at risk of FGM\, particularly in countries and communities where it continues because of deeply rooted social and cultural expectations. \nWhy Zero Tolerance Matters\nEnding FGM requires more than laws and policies. It requires sustained action within families\, communities\, schools\, healthcare systems\, institutions\, and society as a whole. \nCommunities play a critical role in creating lasting change. When parents\, traditional and religious leaders\, young people\, educators\, healthcare workers\, policymakers\, and community organisations come together\, harmful norms can be challenged and replaced with practices that protect the rights and wellbeing of girls. \nPrevention must also be accompanied by appropriate care and support for survivors. Women and girls who have experienced FGM deserve access to respectful\, confidential\, and comprehensive health and psychosocial services. \nProtecting Girls\, Empowering Communities\nEvery girl has the right to grow up free from violence and harmful practices. \nEducation and awareness are powerful tools for prevention. Equipping girls and boys with accurate information\, supporting families\, empowering women and girls\, and engaging community leaders can help create an environment where FGM is no longer seen as necessary or acceptable. \nEnding FGM also requires addressing the social pressures that allow the practice to continue. Communities must be supported to make collective decisions that protect girls without fear of social exclusion or stigma. \nA Collective Responsibility\nThe elimination of FGM is a shared responsibility. \nGovernments must strengthen and enforce laws and policies that protect girls and women. Healthcare professionals must provide appropriate prevention\, treatment\, and survivor-centred care. Schools and educators can promote knowledge and empower young people.
