As part of activities marking World Hepatitis Day 2026, the Osun State Ministry of Health, Abere, Osogbo, in collaboration with SHEAD Centre, organized a press briefing to increase public awareness about viral hepatitis and the urgent need for collective action to eliminate the disease.
The briefing brought together government officials, health professionals, development partners, civil society organizations, and members of the media to highlight the growing burden of viral hepatitis and the importance of coordinated efforts in addressing the challenge.
During the event, speakers emphasized that viral hepatitis remains a major public health concern, affecting millions of people worldwide, many of whom are unaware of their infection. They stressed that increasing public awareness, expanding access to testing, promoting vaccination where applicable, and ensuring timely treatment are critical steps toward reducing new infections and preventing hepatitis-related complications.
The programme also reinforced the message that eliminating hepatitis requires the active participation of governments, healthcare providers, communities, and individuals. Participants were encouraged to take advantage of available screening services, adopt preventive measures, and share accurate information to combat stigma and misinformation surrounding the disease.
