It is the opportunity to discover potential, develop knowledge, build confidence and acquire the skills needed to participate meaningfully in society. Every year on 24 January, the world observes the International Day of Education, recognizing the vital role education plays in building peaceful, inclusive and sustainable societies. But this day is not only about celebrating what education has achieved. It is also a moment to reflect on what still needs to change. Millions of children and young people around the world continue to face barriers to quality education because of poverty, inequality, conflict, displacement, discrimination and limited access to resources. The challenge is therefore not simply to get more people into classrooms, but to ensure that the education they receive is inclusive, equitable, relevant and capable of preparing them for the future. WHY DO WE COMMEMORATE THIS DAY? To reaffirm education as a human right. Every person deserves access to quality education and lifelong learning opportunities. To promote inclusive and equitable education. No learner should be left behind because of poverty, gender, disability, location or social circumstances. To recognize education as a driver of innovation and development. Education equips people with the knowledge and skills to solve problems, create opportunities and contribute to their communities. To recognize the role of education in building peace. Education can promote understanding, dialogue, tolerance and respect for human rights. To encourage collective responsibility. Governments, educators, parents, communities, young people, civil society and the private sector all have a role to play in transforming education. To look ahead. The world is changing rapidly. Technology, artificial intelligence, new industries and evolving social realities are changing what learners need to know and how they learn. Education must evolve with them. EDUCATION IS AN INVESTMENT IN PEOPLE When we invest in education, we are not simply building schools. We are building people. We are developing future teachers, doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs, researchers, leaders, innovators and community builders. We are creating opportunities for individuals to break cycles of poverty, participate in society and contribute to sustainable development. That is why education must remain a priority. Cancer is more than a diagnosis. Behind every diagnosis is a person with a unique story, identity, family, hopes, challenges, and needs. The “United by Unique” theme places people at the centre of cancer care and brings their individual experiences and stories to the heart of the conversation. Putting People at the Centre of Care Effective cancer care goes beyond medical treatment. It means recognising the individual behind the illness and ensuring that people living with cancer, survivors, caregivers, families, and communities are heard, respected, and supported. People may experience the same type of cancer in very different ways. Their access to screening and treatment, emotional wellbeing, financial circumstances, family support, cultural background, and personal choices can all shape their cancer journey. World Cancer Day 2027 calls on us to recognise these differences while strengthening the sense of connection and solidarity that brings us together. Every Cancer Journey Is Unique There is no single cancer experience. For some, the journey begins with prevention and early detection. For others, it involves diagnosis, treatment, recovery, living with cancer, survivorship, or end-of-life care. Families and caregivers also experience the impact of cancer in profound ways. Listening to these experiences matters. Personal stories can help challenge stigma, increase understanding, encourage early action, and remind us that compassionate care must address the whole person, not just the disease. United Through Compassion and Action Being “United by Unique” means embracing the differences in our experiences while working together towards a future where everyone has access to quality cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, support, and care. It calls on governments, healthcare professionals, civil society organisations, communities, families, and individuals to contribute to a more people-centred approach to cancer care.
