GLOBAL HANDWASHING DAY 2027

GLOBAL HANDWASHING DAY 2027

Every day, our hands come into contact with people, surfaces, food, and objects around us. Without proper hand hygiene, germs can easily spread from our hands to our bodies and to the people around us.

Global Handwashing Day reminds us that one of the simplest ways to protect our health is also one of the most powerful: washing our hands properly with soap and clean water.

Handwashing is not just a personal habit. It is an important public health practice that can help reduce the spread of infectious diseases, including diarrhoeal diseases and respiratory infections.

When should you wash your hands?

Make handwashing a regular part of your day, especially:

🔹 Before preparing or eating food
🔹 Before feeding children
🔹 After using the toilet or helping a child use the toilet
🔹 After coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose
🔹 After caring for someone who is sick
🔹 After handling waste
🔹 After touching animals or animal waste
🔹 Whenever your hands are visibly dirty

Wash your hands the right way

Proper handwashing is more than simply putting your hands under water.

1. Wet your hands with clean, running water.
2. Apply soap and lather your hands thoroughly.
3. Scrub your palms, backs of your hands, between your fingers, under your nails, and around your thumbs for at least 20 seconds.
4. Rinse thoroughly under clean, running water.
5. Dry your hands with a clean towel or allow them to air dry.

If soap and clean water are not available, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer can be used when appropriate, particularly when hands are not visibly dirty.

Clean hands, healthier communities

Good hand hygiene starts with an individual, but its impact reaches the entire community.

Parents can teach children. Schools can promote handwashing facilities and good hygiene practices. Healthcare workers can lead by example. Communities can advocate for reliable access to clean water, soap, and sanitation facilities.

Because handwashing should not be a privilege. Everyone deserves access to the basic resources needed to keep their hands clean and protect their health.

This Global Handwashing Day 2027, SHEAD Centre calls on individuals, families, schools, healthcare facilities, workplaces, and communities to make proper handwashing a daily habit.

Clean hands. Healthy people. Stronger communities.

A simple 20-second habit can help protect you and the people around you.
