INTERNATIONAL DAY OF SIGN LANGUAGES 2027

September 23, 2027

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF SIGN LANGUAGES 2027

Communication is a fundamental part of being human. Everyone deserves the opportunity to express themselves, access information, participate in society, and be heard.

For millions of deaf and hard-of-hearing people around the world, sign languages are essential to communication, education, identity, culture, and participation in everyday life.

The International Day of Sign Languages gives us an opportunity to celebrate the richness of sign languages and to promote greater awareness of the importance of linguistic inclusion and accessibility.

Sign Language Is a Language

Sign languages are not simply a collection of gestures or a visual version of spoken languages. They are fully developed natural languages with their own vocabulary, grammar, and linguistic structures.

They provide millions of people with a powerful means of communication and are an important part of the cultural identity of many deaf communities.

Inclusion Begins With Communication

When people cannot access information because communication systems are not inclusive, they can be excluded from important aspects of life.

This can affect access to:

🏥 Healthcare and essential health information

🎓 Education and learning opportunities

💼 Employment and economic opportunities

⚖️ Justice and essential public services

🏘️ Community participation

🚨 Emergency and safety information

Inclusive communication is therefore not simply about convenience. It is about rights, dignity, equality, and participation.

Sign Language and Health

Accessible communication is particularly important in healthcare.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing people should be able to communicate effectively with healthcare providers, understand health information, explain their symptoms, ask questions, and make informed decisions about their health.

Healthcare services should therefore strive to provide communication support that enables everyone to receive care with dignity and understanding.

Building More Inclusive Communities

Inclusion requires more than awareness. It requires action.

We can create more inclusive communities by:

🔹 Promoting awareness and understanding of sign languages.

🔹 Encouraging sign language learning among families, educators, healthcare workers, and community members.

🔹 Improving accessibility in schools, healthcare facilities, workplaces, and public institutions.

🔹 Providing qualified sign language interpretation where needed.

🔹 Ensuring important public information is accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing people.

🔹 Challenging discrimination, stigma, and misconceptions surrounding deafness.

At SHEAD Centre, we believe that every person deserves to be treated with dignity and have equal opportunities to participate in society.

Creating inclusive communities means recognising different ways of communicating and removing barriers that prevent people from accessing essential services and opportunities.

This International Day of Sign Languages, let us learn, listen, and take action.

🤟🏽 Learn sign language.
💙 Promote accessibility.
🤝🏽 Challenge discrimination.
🏥 Make healthcare more inclusive.
🎓 Support inclusive education.
🌍 Build communities where everyone can participate.

Communication is a right. Inclusion is a responsibility.

Let us build a world where every voice, whether spoken, signed, written, or expressed in another form, has the opportunity to be understood and respected.
