WORLD CHAGAS DISEASE DAY (WYHO)

WORLD CHAGAS DISEASE DAY
Every 14 April, the world observes World Chagas Disease Day to raise awareness about Chagas disease, a neglected tropical disease that affects millions of people, particularly in vulnerable and underserved communities.
Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and is mainly transmitted through contact with infected triatomine bugs, commonly known as “kissing bugs.” It can also be transmitted through contaminated food, blood transfusion, organ transplantation, and from an infected mother to her baby during pregnancy or childbirth.
Many people with Chagas disease may have no symptoms for years. However, if left undiagnosed and untreated, the infection can eventually cause serious heart and digestive complications.
Why Awareness Matters
Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent or reduce the progression of Chagas disease and its complications. Increasing public awareness, improving access to testing and treatment, strengthening prevention measures, and supporting affected communities are essential to tackling the disease.
On World Chagas Disease Day, let us:
🔹 Learn about Chagas disease and how it is transmitted.
🔹 Promote early diagnosis and access to treatment.
🔹 Support stronger disease surveillance and prevention.
🔹 Challenge the stigma surrounding neglected tropical diseases.
🔹 Advocate for healthcare that reaches underserved communities.
Chagas disease may be neglected, but the people affected by it should never be.
Together, we can raise awareness, promote early detection, improve access to care, and work towards a healthier world where no one is left behind.
World Chagas Disease Day
Raise awareness. Promote prevention. Support early diagnosis.
