INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY [UNESCO] (UNESCO 14 C/RESOLUTION 1.441)

INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY 2027

Literacy: The Foundation for Empowerment, Opportunity and Change

Every person deserves the opportunity to learn, read, write, understand information, and participate fully in society.

International Literacy Day, proclaimed by UNESCO, reminds us that literacy is more than the ability to read and write. It is a fundamental foundation for lifelong learning, personal development, social participation, and sustainable development.

Literacy gives people the tools to understand the world around them and make informed decisions about their lives.

📖 Why Literacy Matters

A literate person is better equipped to access information, understand their rights, pursue education, seek employment opportunities, and participate meaningfully in their community.

Literacy also has a powerful connection to health.

The ability to understand health information, follow medical instructions, recognise health risks, access available services, and make informed decisions can contribute to better health outcomes for individuals, families, and communities.

For children, literacy creates a strong foundation for learning and future opportunities.

For young people and adults, it can open pathways to employment, entrepreneurship, independence, and participation in society.

For communities, stronger literacy contributes to greater inclusion, resilience, and development.

👧🏽👦🏽 Every Child Deserves the Chance to Learn

Millions of children and adults continue to face barriers to education and literacy because of poverty, displacement, conflict, disability, gender inequality, limited educational resources, and other social and economic challenges.

These barriers should not determine a person’s future.

We must continue working towards inclusive learning opportunities that reach children, young people, adults, and marginalised communities.

🤝🏽 Literacy Is Everyone’s Responsibility

Promoting literacy requires collective action.

📚 Parents and families can encourage reading and learning at home.

🏫 Schools and teachers can create supportive and inclusive learning environments.

🏘️ Communities can promote reading, adult education, and lifelong learning.

🏛️ Governments and institutions can invest in accessible, quality education and literacy programme.

🤝🏽 Civil society organizations can support communities that face barriers to education and access to learning opportunities.

🌍 Literacy Creates Possibilities

Literacy can turn information into knowledge, knowledge into confidence, and confidence into opportunity.

It allows people to communicate, learn, advocate for themselves, access services, and contribute to the development of their communities.

At SHEAD Centre, we believe that sustainable development begins with empowered people. Promoting literacy and access to learning is therefore an important part of building healthier, more informed, inclusive, and resilient communities.

On this International Literacy Day, let us renew our commitment to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow, and reach their full potential.

Because literacy is not simply about knowing how to read and write. It is about having the tools to understand, participate, decide, and create a better future.

📖 Promote literacy.
🎓 Support education.
🤝🏽 Remove barriers to learning.
🌍 Empower communities.
