World Breastfeeding Week 2026

August 1 - August 7

Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works

Every year from August 1 to 7, the global community marks World Breastfeeding Week to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and to encourage actions that improve the health and well-being of mothers and children.

The theme for World Breastfeeding Week 2026, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,” emphasizes the need to build on proven interventions that protect, promote, and support breastfeeding. It calls on governments, healthcare providers, employers, communities, and families to strengthen policies and systems that enable every mother to breastfeed successfully.

Breastfeeding remains one of the most effective ways to give every child the healthiest possible start in life. It provides all the nutrients an infant needs during the first six months, strengthens the immune system, reduces the risk of childhood illnesses, and supports healthy physical and cognitive development. Mothers also benefit through improved postpartum recovery and a reduced risk of certain cancers and other non-communicable diseases.

In addition to its health benefits, breastfeeding contributes to environmental sustainability. As a natural and renewable source of nutrition, it requires no manufacturing, packaging, transportation, or waste disposal, making it an environmentally friendly feeding option that supports a healthier planet.

At SHEAD Centre, we recognize that creating an enabling environment for breastfeeding is a shared responsibility. Through advocacy, community engagement, health education, and partnerships, we remain committed to promoting maternal and child health while supporting initiatives that empower mothers and improve child survival.

As we commemorate World Breastfeeding Week 2026, we encourage families, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and community leaders to continue strengthening the systems and support networks that have proven effective. Together, we can ensure that every child receives the best possible start in life and contribute to healthier communities for generations to come.
